The Nation's First Advertising Agency Man.

This website, named after Mr. Palmer, shows different creative work
from art directors & copywriters during their participation in my
teaching program as part of the Quarter Away of the Miami AD School

Around 1840, Volney B. Palmer established the roots of the modern day advertising agency in Philadelphia. In 1842 Palmer bought large amounts of space in various newspapers at a discounted rate then resold the space at higher rates to advertisers. The actual ad - the copy, layout, and artwork - was still prepared by the company wishing to advertise; in effect, Palmer was a space broker. The situation changed in the late 19th century when the advertising agency of N.W. Ayer & Son was founded. Ayer and Son offered to plan, create, and execute complete advertising campaigns for its customers. By 1900 the advertising agency had become the focal point of creative planning, and advertising was firmly established as a profession. At first, agencies were brokers for advertisement space in newspapers. N. W. Ayer & Son was the first full-service agency to assume responsibility for advertising content. N.W. Ayer opened in 1869, and was located in Philadelphia.

Fact 1:In 2008 Peggy Stein, Director of OneBigAgency, offered the Miami AD School to open a 'Greenhouse' in Amsterdam as part of their Quarter Away Teaching Program and invited me to be part of the teachers.

Fact 2:In 2010, spending on advertising was estimated at $142.5 billion in the United States and $467 billion worldwide while newspaper ads have fallen by two-thirds from $60 billion in the late-1990s to $20 billion in 2011.

Fact 3: 2011 a 10.5% increase in US online ad spend followed by double-digit growth every year through 2014 when spending will reach $40.5 billion. This trend reflects how most forms of internet advertising are now seen as more of a 'sure thing' than most traditional media.
Total media ad spending for 2014 is estimated for  $188.5 billion.

"Participating in the 'Quarter Away' teaching program of the Miami AD School ( MAS) Amsterdam is to teach the students both presentation skills and 'outside the box' thinking. Classes on Contemporary Art, Artists & Design, Art history as well as movie analysis are the tools with which I supply the students with information to work on their assignments.

The assignments make the students research into their creativity and their own boundaries, trying to open new doors and helping them understand their position as 'creatives' within the current market situation and advertising. Besides creativity, something more is recquired: to understand the system and how to change the rules, with a particular vision." - Victor Alling.
